What You'll Need
The Training
You must be 18 years old or older to be eligible for the Commercial Pilot Certificate.
Age Requirement
You must hold a Private Pilot Certificate before beginning commercial pilot training.
Private Pilot Certificate
At least a Second Class Medical Certificate is required to exercise commercial pilot privileges. You can begin training with a Third Class, but you’ll need Second Class to act as PIC for compensation or hire. More information regarding medical certificates can be found here.
FAA Medical Certificate
U.S. citizens need to show a birth certificate or passport. Non-citizens must complete vetting through the TSA to receive flight training. We can provide guidance for this process.
Proof of Citizenship or TSA Approval
You'll cover topics including advanced aerodynamics, aircraft performance, systems, regulations for commercial operations, weight and balance, and complex aircraft procedures. Ground school prepares you for the FAA written exam and checkride.
Ground School
You must pass the Commercial Pilot Airplane (CAX) knowledge test which is a 100 question multiple choice exam.
FAA Written Exam
Minimum 250 total flight hours, including:

100 hours as pilot-in-command (PIC)

50 hours of cross-country time

20 hours of flight training with an instructor, including:
-
10 hours in a complex or technically advanced airplane (TAA)

5 hours of night VFR with 10 takeoffs and landings
-
One 2-hour day cross-country flight over 100 NM

One 2-hour night cross-country flight over 100 NM
-
3 hours of checkride prep within 2 calendar months of the test

10 hours of solo time (or as PIC in a dual-received training flight), including:

One cross-country flight of at least 300 NM with landings at 3 airports

5 hours of night VFR with 10 full-stop landings

Flight Training
Pass the Commercial Pilot practical test, consisting of an oral exam on the ground and then a flight test with a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE).
