Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC)  in Hillsboro, OR

If you're instrument rated but haven’t met the currency requirements under FAR 61.57(c), you’ll need an Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC) to regain your IFR privileges. The IPC is not a formal test, but it must be conducted by an authorized instructor (CFII). It includes both ground and flight portions and is designed to refresh and evaluate your ability to safely operate under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). Whether you’ve been out of IMC for a while or just need to meet recency requirements, an IPC is your pathway back to instrument currency.

What you need to know

You need an IPC if you haven’t logged:

  • 6 instrument approaches

  • Holding procedures

  • Intercepting and tracking courses
...in the last 6 months, and haven’t regained currency in the next 6-month grace period.

When It’s Required

Includes review of:

  • IFR regulations (Part 91)

  • Approach plates and procedures

  • IFR chart interpretation

  • Decision-making, emergencies, and lost comms procedures

Ground Review

Must include evaluation of:

  • Holding procedures

  • Intercepting and tracking navigational signals

  • Non-precision and precision approaches

  • Missed approach procedures

  • Unusual attitude recovery (simulated IMC)

Flight Portion

No substitutes. If you go more than 6 months beyond your instrument currency window (i.e., haven't completed the 6 approaches, holding, and tracking within the past 12 months), you must complete an IPC to legally fly under IFR again.
